Pillar 7: Personal Growth and Adaptability

Pillar 7 of 9

Personal Growth & Adaptability

The continuous renovation.

Another year, and still not started? You are not alone. I am Chris Ellison (BSW, MSW, MBA), and in nearly thirty years as a therapist I have watched capable people wait for the perfect moment, the right feeling, or full confidence before they begin.

What it means: a life is never finished. This pillar is the willingness to keep learning, to adjust when circumstances change, and to treat setbacks as information rather than verdicts.

How it shows up in your life: waiting to feel motivated before you start, a failure that stopped you from trying again, the same year repeated with a new calendar, and a quiet fear that it is too late to change.

Try this today: the Engine Principle. Motivation usually follows action, not the other way around. Pick one small thing you have been postponing and give it five minutes. Then ask the Failure-as-Data question about your last setback: what did it teach me?

This is one of nine pillars in my book, A Life Well-Lived. Get the first word when it is ready.  Next: Pillar 8, Environmental Wellness →
