This policy explains what personal information A Life Well-Lived (alifewelllived.ca) and the free tools at app.canquestmedia.ca collect, why, and the choices you have. A Life Well-Lived is a book and website project by Chris Ellison, published under CanQuest Media. It is separate from his counselling practice, Ellison Counselling Services. Nothing you do on this site creates a client relationship, and this site is not used to collect health information.
The short version
- The free tools, on the web and as Android apps, do not ask for your name or email and do not send your answers to us.
- If you join the newsletter, we collect your email address so we can send it.
- The site and its service providers collect ordinary visitor statistics, such as which pages are visited.
- We do not sell your information.
What we collect, and why
Newsletter sign-up. When you subscribe to The House Visit, you give your email address (and any other detail you choose to enter) to our newsletter service, beehiiv. We use it to send the newsletter, the free chapter and updates about the books. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email. Subscribing is your consent under Canada’s anti-spam law (CASL); we do not add anyone to the list without it.
The free tools and apps. The First Minute does not store or transmit anything you type or choose. Walk Through Your House saves your scores only in your own web browser or app, on your own device, so you can come back later. We do not receive them. Clearing your browser or app data removes them. The tools are hosted at app.canquestmedia.ca on Netlify, so Netlify may see standard technical information such as your IP address when a page loads. The tools also load fonts from Google Fonts, which can receive your IP address. The same tools are available as free Android apps through Google Play, which work the same way and use no accounts, advertising or tracking.
Visitor statistics. Our website is hosted by WordPress.com (Automattic), which collects standard technical information and visitor statistics (for example pages viewed, approximate location, browser type) and may use cookies. We use this to understand which pages are useful. Links from our social posts carry a small tag, such as utm_source, so we can see where visitors came from.
Social media and messages. If you contact us on Instagram, Facebook or another platform, or reply to an automated message, that platform and our scheduling and messaging tools (Metricool, ManyChat) process your message and your public profile name under their own policies. Please do not send private or health information through social media.
Who handles your information
We use these services to run the project: WordPress.com (website), beehiiv (newsletter), Metricool (post scheduling), ManyChat (automated replies on Instagram), Google (fonts, and Google Play for the Android apps) and Netlify (hosting of the free tools). They process information on our behalf and under their own privacy terms, and some store data outside Canada, including in the United States. We do not sell or rent your information.
How long we keep it
We keep your email address while you are subscribed. When you unsubscribe it is removed from active mailings; ask us if you want it deleted entirely.
Your choices and rights
You may ask to see what we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted, and you may withdraw consent to emails at any time. Write to us at the address below. If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children
This site, the tools and the newsletter are written for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes
If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the date above.
