Pillar 6 of 9
Financial Health
The supporting infrastructure.
Staying put because you cannot afford to leave? You are not alone. I am Chris Ellison (BSW, MSW, MBA), and in nearly thirty years as a therapist I have seen how money worries quietly shape the biggest decisions in people’s lives.
What it means: this pillar is not about being rich. It is about having enough room to choose. Financial health is the support under your other eight pillars, and when it is shaky, everything above it feels the strain.
How it shows up in your life: staying in a job, or a situation, only because leaving feels too costly; a lifestyle that rises every time income does; money talks that turn into arguments; and a low hum of worry that never quite switches off.
Try this today: the Autonomy Buffer. Build toward three to six months of basic expenses, and automate a small transfer so it happens without willpower. Even a modest start changes how free you feel. Then do an Ego Check: what am I buying to impress someone who is not really paying attention?
This is one of nine pillars in my book, A Life Well-Lived. Get the first word when it is ready. Next: Pillar 7, Personal Growth & Adaptability →
